CHAPTER 12
There were no designated drivers available for Snow to hitch a ride with, so he left his car parked on the street near Dinkâs Tavern and took a ten-minute hike up the street to the Silver Saddle.
It was completely dark inside. Snow unlocked the front door and flipped on the light switches. The overhead fluorescent lights made a humming noise. The ballasts probably needed to be replaced. Nobody sold the old magnetic ballasts anymore, so heâd need to buy the electronic type and figure out how to connect the wires. Or just buy new light fixtures.
He walked around to each of the beer signs and turned them on, which added even more humming. Of course, once the bar was full of drunks, yelling at each other, the humming would no longer be audible.
After checking the restrooms, Snow went into the storeroom and looked around. The bed had been made. Next to that was a nightstand with a lamp which seemed necessary to add more lumens to the single incandescent bulb hanging by a cord from the ceiling.
Across from the bed was five-drawer chest with a mobile hotspot sitting on top of it. The hotspot was plugged into a wall socket and turned on. So, the saloon had WiFi even though it had no customers yet.
Snow opened and closed all of the drawers and found some clothes, but nothing else. He checked the drawers in the nightstand. The top drawer contained a charging cord and a couple of USB cables. The other two drawers were empty.
On his way out of the room, Snow switched off the lone light bulb and headed to the bar. There was a dozen or so bottles of bourbon, gin, and vodka on the counter in front of the mirror. Snow opened the cooler and noticed it was half full of various brands of beer. He reached in and pulled out a bottle and popped the cap off from it.
It was then that he noticed a rolled up sleeping bag and a pad on the floor, tucked under the back of the bar.
As he took a swig of beer, he wondered what that was doing there. Bachelors stored things in the oddest places.
He walked out from behind the bar and perched on one of the stools. Swiveling around on his bar stool, he rested his elbows on the bar and glanced around the inside of the old saloon, listening to the humming of the lights and beer signs, accompanied by the occasional creaking of the building, settling.
An eerie feeling swept over him. These walls had seen a lot in a hundred and ten years. He wondered if Kwan Moon had been the only victim of murder here. He suddenly felt uncomfortable being here alone at night. Maybe Kwan was attacked by a paranormal being. Snow didnât believe in such nonsense, but who could be sure what existed in the other dimensions of reality.
He took a drink of beer and turned his head toward the open door to the storeroom.
